BEAUTIFUL CONCKERA

Here's a photo of me taken just before Christmas at Conckera in County Fermanagh, Ireland, where my mother grew up and which is just a couple of miles away from the sweet little town of Clones.

Conckera has a lake and lots of bogland. There are trees which turn to gold when the sun shines on them (look behind me) and some of the greenest grass you'll ever set eyes on. I think it's one of the most beautiful places on earth, but of course - I'm biased! My cousin Peter still lives there with his family and he and his two brothers made my visit so memorable.

I hadn't visited since I was four years old but I'd heard so much about it that I'd built up a vivid picture in my mind. It didn't disappoint. How could it?. Some places are just perfect because of their associations and this is one of them.
Do you have a place like that, one which is very close to your heart?

  1. What a great trip tracing your roots Sharon. And gateways are always great stopping and contemplating spots ...

For me, the ancient Tarr Steps bridge on Exmoor brings back warm memories of family walks - and is a fascinating place in itself. Have you ever been to Exmoor, or perhaps read Lorna Doone?

ps Just realised the photo I've linked to (through name) has golden leaves and a gate in it too!

    1. Just clicked onto the link (on your name), Jack and yes, that is SPOOKY to see the duplication of golden leaves and a gate. Though maybe both are necessary components of all magical places.....

  3. No, Jack - I haven't read Lorna Doone.... Should I? Is it dark and atmospheric and about doomed love, or am I mixing it up with something else?
(But you've made me want to visit the Tarr Steps bridge).

    1. Lorna Doone is all those things and more ... although not a quick read with all the historical context and subplots. The films and TV versions cut straight to the romance element - I'd definitely recommend experiencing it that way. It's a lovely story.

I've just finished the first, gripping, chapter of Jamaica Inn ...

  4. Yes, Rachael - it was amazing, and the bare branches of the trees looked as if someone had dipped them in gold paint!

Ireland is on my wish list... maybe for next Christmas.

I send you this link of my favourite song about Ireland, sung by Mary Black.
