AN EVENING FOR MAGPIES

Do you love bling - or are you one of those people who consider a sleek black suit, teemed with the perfect white shirt to be the epitome of taste?
If you fall into the latter category, then you might wish to look away!

Here I am with fellow author - the lovely Lynn Raye-Harris, at the annual extravaganza which is the RWA's Awards dinner. I think it would be fair to say that it is an evening where no dress could be considered too outré, no jewellery too lavish - and here we are sporting glittering spoils around our necks which would make any magpie want to swoop down on us!

I've just started a new book, which is - of course - why I am posting whimsical posts on my blog! And since this is a blatant request for inspiration (the beginning of a book is always difficult - because although you "know" them in your head, you're still finding out about the characters) - won't you tell me whether you prefer subtle or sparkly.

Or even about the last time you really dressed up....

  1. I tend to be a bit of a minimalist. Less is more...but extravagance can also be a lot of fun.

I will be dressing up this weekend for my niece's wedding on Saturday. I cannot express my joy for her.

She's always been a special child. She survived childhood leukemia and has devoted her life to helping others. She's been a nurse for the past year and spends most of her free time volunteering to help the elderly and infirm.

Amy is definitely one of a kind. Unlike her uncle, she likes bling. And plenty of it. Good for her, I say.

  2. My whole life I was NOT a jewelry person, but then I had a child and couldn't wear jewelry (very grabby little hands) and all of the sudden I wanted to wear it!
I wouldn't describe my taste as sparkly or subtle so much as funky. I would love to be the kind of person that could pull together the perfect quirky vintage outfit and fun costume jewelry. Sadly, my wardrobe rotates between boring khakis and boring jeans. So much easier when you're crawling on the floor with toddler every day ;-) I save the bling for when I leave the house without him.

  3. Oh, Dan - I wish your niece all the happiness in the world. Have a fantastic time - and can you please send a photo of her in her dress?

And Jill, the crawling around on the floor with a toddler is one of the very best phases of life....lucky you.

  4. I would love to sparkle but my prob is i don't know how to accessorise (or spell it lol). My rings are all gold with dark blue sapphires, love them! I'm a sublte fan for myself but love admiring others sparkles. Dressed up alot this year for weddings - so many lovely dresses out there at the moment :)

  5. TashNz - I love the sound of gold rings with dark blue sapphires.

A stone I really admire (but actually don't have!) is lapis lazuli...apart from the deep, deep cerulean colour (am trying to avoid repetition of "blue"!), it's such a romantic name!

  6. I think it all depends on what your wearing.
If you are wearing a simple LBD, go crazy with the jewellery. The more ostentatious the better!
But if you have a colourful outfit, less is more.

I'm not one for expensive and precious jewellery, I'm a bit clumsy so it would end up broken, or worse lost! That's the reason why my engagement ring is a simple band with a small stone, not some giant rock of a diamond, can you imagine the argument when (and it would be a 'when') I lost that...!

Best of luck with your new book.

    Xx

  7. Thanks, RLA. At the moment, I'm loving writing about Lily and Ciro *crosses fingers in case she's jinxed it*
